AFFILIATED ORGANIZATIONS
Dismayed by the lack of marksmanship shown by their troops, Union veterans Col. William C. Church and Gen. George
Wingate formed the National Rifle Association in 1871. After being granted a charter by the state of New York on November
17, 1871, the NRA was founded. Civil War Gen. Ambrose Burnside, who was also the former governor of Rhode Island and a
U.S. Senator, became the fledgling NRA's first president. The NRA's interest in promoting the shooting sports among America's
youth began in 1903 when NRA Secretary Albert S. Jones urged the establishment of rifle clubs at all major colleges,
universities and military academies. By 1906, NRA's youth program was in full swing with more than 200 boys competing in
matches at Sea Girt that summer. Today, youth programs are still a cornerstone of the NRA, with more than one million youth
participating in NRA shooting sports events and affiliated programs with groups such as 4-H, the Boy Scouts of America, the American Legion,
U.S. Jaycees and others.
A 1903 Act of Congress established the National Board for the Promotion of Rifle Practice. The Act led to the
subsequent creation of the Civilian Marksmanship Program as a means of realizing the Board’s objective of
teaching marksmanship skills to civilians. The original Civilian Marksmanship Program was, until 1996,
administered by the Office of the Director of Civilian Marksmanship in the Department of the Army. The current
Civilian Marksmanship Program was created in 1996 when far-sighted federal legislation established the
Corporation for the Promotion of Rifle Practice and Firearm Safety as a private, nonprofit corporation responsible for the “supervision, oversight,
and control of the Civilian Marksmanship Program.” The act transferred the mission and assets of the Department of the Army’s Office of the
Director of Civilian Marksmanship to the new Corporation. CMP promotes competition, and promotes sales of military firearms and ammunition.

universities all over America. Over 20,000 schools in total! You can make a contribution indicating the school
of your preference to receive the benefit of your gift.
Shooting teams of high-schools, colleges, and universities provide wonderful opportunities for students to
make friends, to develop confidence, and learn discipline and leadership skills, just like other sports. However,
most schools provide little or no funding for shooting teams, so its up to us to help. On our website you will
find nearly every high-school, college, and university in America, the endowment goals we have set for each
school, the contributions received to date, the current active shooting programs for each school, and the
anticipated funding for next season events. Your contribution will be invested with the earnings provided each year to the shooting teams.
This allows your gift to provide permanent funding and truly change the future. Please visit our website, www.scholasticshootingtrust.org,
and make a gift today specifying the school or schools of your preference to receive the benefits of your contribution. Your gift may support
existing shooting programs or help new ones get started, allowing more students to develop the skills necessary to become tomorrow's
leaders. So please join me in contributing and be generous.
Yavapai Recreation League
Practical Shooting attempts to measure the ability to shoot rapidly and accurately with a full power handgun, rifle,
and/or shotgun. Those three elements - speed, accuracy, and power - form the three sides of the practical
shooting triangle. By design, each match will measure a shooter's ability in all three areas.
To do this, shooters take on obstacle-laden shooting courses (called stages) requiring anywhere from six to 30+
shots to complete. The scoring system measures points scored per second, then weights the score to compensate
for the number of shots fired. If they miss a target, or shoot inaccurately, points are deducted, lowering that all-
important points-per-second score.
