levels), Expert and, ultimately the Junior Distinguished Expert rankings. The club provides a safe, like-minded, wholesome, social atmosphere
for the children and their parents, too. Additionally, my experience has shown it is a terrific place for the youngsters to become aware, not only
of their capacity to learn and accomplish goals, but to develop personal, and societal, responsibility for their actions, and, of course, it is a great
way for them to develop confidence in themselves and their capabilities. All good life lessons, I say; and I'm happy to say the parents are in
agreement with these principles. - Rich Bassett
Coach Rich started Smallbore Rifle shooting in 1957; he has won many Individual and Team Championships over the ensuing years. In 1973,
he became a National-level, NRA Senior Distinguished Expert in Four-Position Smallbore Rifle. Rich considers it a priviledge to have his name
on five NRA Smallbore Rifle National Records.
As an NRA Certified Instructor and Coach, Rich has taught marksmanship to over 900 people, both youngsters and adults alike, over the course
of the past 36+ years; his coaching has enabled many teams, adults and young shooters to achieve numerous, and varied, rankings and
championships.
Under his guidance, 13 boys and girls have completed the NRA Junior Four-Position Smallbore Rifle Distinguished Expert Classification. Many,
many hundreds more have attained the NRA classifications for Pro-marksman, Marksman, Marksman-1st Class and Sharpshooter (including
many who attained Sharpshooter levels one through nine). Approximately 100 of those level-nine Sharpshooters also achieved the NRA Junior
Expert Marksman Classification.
All of the Junior Clubs’ programs are conducted utilizing excellent teaching aids and techniques, many of which have come from the NRA as
well as National and World-level shooters; an added bonus is the experience Rich has developed, and used, during his many years of
competition and teaching.
All class sessions are guided by using the “Treat-Others-as-You-Would-Like-to-be-Treated” method of respecting one another; and a “Go-at-
Your-Own-Pace” system of advancement.
A California native, Rich has been in Arizona since 2002. He resides in Sun City West.

the ASRPA Junior Smallbore Rifle
Marksmanship Programs at the Ben
Avery Shooting Facility, Phoenix, AZ
I am running the Junior Smallbore Rifle Programs on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at the Ben
Avery range. I am an NRA Certified Rifle Instructor and Coach.
At present approximately 16 youngsters are in attendance on Tuesday and about that many for the
Thursday night sessions; this includes boys and girls ranging in age from 9 to 17.
We offer a basic, six-session Marksmanship Training Program teaching range safety rules and the
proper handling of firearms everywhere they are present; also, how to shoot consistently, with the aim
of becoming capable of shooting five-shot-groups which can be covered with a .25 cent piece. These
are shot from either a table-top supported, or a prone-supported position. We provide all the
necessary equipment, ammo, etc., from the targets to the rifles.
In addition, we have a Junior Rifle Club called the Sharpshooters. Usually, if a youngster wants to
continue on to learn position shooting, the club is a good fit for them. We also provide all the
necessary equipment, ammo, etc., from the targets to the rifles for this program.
Several of the parents are aiding myself, and two other gentlemen, in these programs so
the youngsters can earn awards; these come in the form of Certificates, Patches, Hat Pins and Medals
gained by advancing through the Pro-Marksman, Marksman, Marksman 1st-Class, Sharpshooter (nine
